Exploring the Rich Heritage of Kansas Art Presentation
“Great art speaks powerfully, inspires fresh thinking, and connects us to our past.” The 5.4.7 Arts Center will host a public lecture by Professor William Tsutsui, Exploring the Rich Heritage of Kansas Art. Kansas boasts a long, vibrant, and diverse history of art, filled with debates, contestations, and drama. This presentation explores the big names (Sandzen and Curry to name a few) and the lesser known artists of Kansas’ visual art community. From the famous to the ‘outsiders,’ this presentation explores our rich artistic heritage and timeless Kansas themes, such as our relationship with the land and the impact of individuals and groups of people on society.
This event will begin at 2 pm on Sunday, April 5th, 2009 at the 5.4.7 Arts Center, 204 W. Wisconsin, Greensburg. This presentation is free and open to the public.
William M. Tsutsui (pronounced "Suit-SOO-ee") is a professor of history and associate dean for International Studies in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Kansas, where he has been teaching since 1993. A Harvard graduate in East Asian Studies, he has a master's degree in history from Oxford University and a Ph.D. from Princeton. He also studied in Tokyo under a Fulbright graduate research fellowship. His major research area is modern Japanese history. Bill is the author of several books and numerous articles on Japanese business management, popular culture, and environmental history. He has been award a Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence and the Steeples Award for Service to the People of Kansas from KU. Bill is a former president of the Kansas State Historical Society, and he serves on the Advisory Board of the Beach Museum of Art at Kansas State University. He served on the KHC Board of Directors from 2000-2006 and was a member of the KHC Speakers Bureau from 1999-2002 and re-joined in 2009.
